Usac Cave System
The unique Usac Cave system is situated on Pester Plateau in Sjenica Municipality, and is connected with the Uvac Special Nature Reserve. The Usac Cave system consists of several connected caves: the Cave Usacka Pecina, the Cave Ledena Pecina and the pit Bezdana Jama with total length of 6.185 meters. This is the longest cave system in Serbia.
The Cave of the Usacka Pecina is the lowest maze of channels of the system located in the hamlet of Ušak that belongs to Gornje Lopiže village. The entrance of the Usacka Pecina Cave, at the stream-sink is situated at the end of the blind valley of the stream Duboki Potok at 1.020 meters above sea level and the entrance at the spring is at 955 meters above sea level. The pit of Bezdana Jama is situated at the end of dry valley Miletin Do and consists of two parts : the pit which is the second entrance to the cave system and the cave which joins the galleries of the Cave Ledena Pecina Cave whose length includes the side passages is slightly over two and half kilometers and leads to the gorgeous Uvac River canyon. The fabulous scenery of the Uvac River valley to where the Usacka Pecina cave exits is suitable for camping, so especially in the summer time, tents and nature-lovers are a frequent sight. The exit can be accessed rather easily, as well as the initial several hundred meters into the cave. However, only those who have explored the Usac cave in detail may venture to pass through the labyrinths made up of many and intricate passageways. Regardless of how many times one passes through them, there is always something new to see. Who knows, perhaps behind this fallen limestone rock of the Usac Pecina Cave system, decorated with icy-looking stalactites covers a passage to the yet unexplored world hidden still deeper in the Earth’s insides.
