Tisa River
Tisa River is considered the largest tributary of Danube River by its total length of 977 kilometers. Tisa River’s source is in Ukraine in the Western Carpathians where the Black Tisa at the altitude of 960 meters and White Tisa at the altitude of 1700 meters join. The Tisa River flows through Ukraine, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary and Serbia. The portion of the Tisa River course through Ukraine features the fast mountainous river characteristics with the highest fall in Europe. Tisa River is navigable for 690 kilometers from its confluence into Danube river in Hungary when the level of Tisa is convenient. In Serbia Tisa River’s course is 164 km long from the confluence into Danube up to the Serbian-Hungarian border which is 17 % of its total length. The Tisa River is the natural border between Bačka District on its right shore and Banat District on its left side. As it touches Srem District in Stari Slankamen where it joins the Danube River, the Tisa River is true river of Vojvodina Province. Tisa River is the main river in Vojvodina in regard with its wide and turbulent course. It is also an unique place for tourists, researchers and fishermen. The settlement of Aradac is situated on the territory of Zrenjanin Municipality, at the 37th kilometer of Tisa River course through Serbia is tourist oasis for swimmers and tourists in summer.
The Tisa River is characterized by quiet shores, sandy beaches and small grovers that invite for quiet holidays and invigoration. However, June provides one of the most beautiful natural phenomenon of the Tisa River – the Blooming of the Tisa River. Then happens short and wonderful rise and fly from the river of millions of the Tiski cvet – Tisa Flower insects /long-tailed mayflies – Palingenia longicauda/ with the aim of species extension. This natural phenomenon lasts few hours and can be observed only once in the year on the Tisa River in Serbia and on the Yangtze River in China. Numerous cultural performances, workshops and authentic events are organized during the Blooming of Tisa River phenomenon.
The Titelski breg loess plateau in Vojvodina, at the far south-east of the Backa District is an unique natural phenomenon. The Titelski breg – Titelski breg loess plateau rises above the confluence of the Begej River with the Tisa River, in the area known as the Šajkaška. The Titelski breg loess plateau is partially encircled in the east by the Tisa River, and elevates from the flat area as the island of 130 meters in height, surrounded with the sleepy and quiet small settlements of Vojvodina – Mošorin, Vilovo, Lok and Titel. Thanks to extraordinary natural features, the rich flora and fauna, and primarily, thanks to huge areas of geomorphologic forms, the Titelski breg loess plateau is under protection as the Special nature reserve of the 1st category. Centennial White and Canadian willows, various withy and poplar species, tiscie trees, and horn-beam and ash trees, and few acacia trees and numerous stumps and logs create a rare and unusual florist habitat of this part of the Tisa River course. The surface of the loess plateau of the Titelski breg is 79,5 sq m, the full length is 18 km, width is 7,5 km, and an average elevation is 120 meters, making it the most interesting loess plateau in Central Europe. From the elevation of the Titelski breg plateau spreads wonderful panorama of the confluence of the Begej River with the Tisa River, while the Tisa River joins the Danube River only few km away in Stari Slankamen village, providing the small town of Titel fame as the town which lies on three rivers and 2 confluences.
Legend has it that in proximity of the confluence of the two rivers, the coffin of the famous Attila the Hun – conqueror was submerged. The same legend also has it that the Attila the Hun, leader of the Hunnic Empire was buried in the golden coffin along with the golden carriage.
For its beautiful sandy beach and various tourist infrastructure, Titel is very attractive spot in Vojvodina, interesting to visitors who seek the true vacations, exploration of cultural sites, fantastic fresh fish specialties, but first of all – the outstanding natural values. At “Biserno Ostrvo” terrains and the area of “Dead Tisa River” are among the most popular fishing destinations of Serbia. They offer fishermen not only great angling but also some magnificent scenery and good variety of accommodations. There are picturesque vineyard cottages hidden in small vineyards and orchards and tiny authentic restaurants on the river bank serving only fresh-caught fish. Small paths through tranquil marshland takes you up to the breakwater from where you can swim, fish and use it to bid your boat.
