Soko Monastery
The newly established Soko Monastery has been constructed in 1991 in the magnificent scenery of Ljubovija town and the Drina River in west Serbia. The Soko Monastery is dedicated to the Saint Nikolai Velimirović which is celebrated on the 3rd May, and has been built on the place of the former Soko Town fortification, only to be reached by a narrow path. The church of the Soko Monastery features the cruciform base of the late Morava style of architecture and is covered with shingle. Wood-carved baroque iconostasis is gold-plated and contains icons hand-painted by the famous icon painter Krstana Tasić. In the altar of the Soko Monastery church are kept holy relics of the Saint Nikolai /Saint Nicholas/. On the top of the elevation of the Soko Mountains there is the 12 meters high golden cross, which shines in the moon. Above the Soko Monastery there is the old Soko grad fortification dated to the 15th century, which used to be the final Turkish stronghold.
Within the monastic complex there is the Dormitory of Nikolai Velimirović which provides accommodation and spiritual retreat of visitors, as well as other premises used by visitors – fishpond, observation points, waterfalls… The Dormitory boasts pleasantly arranged accommodation of total 190 beds, organized in 20 single rooms, 10 double rooms and 10 multi-bed rooms. The Dormitory also contains the Monastic Museum, kitchen with vast dining room, the library and the souvenir shop. The large and the small Dormitories of the Soko Monastery are connected with the space with 90 seats used for various meetings and events. On the top of the Dormitory there is the large terrace with the observation point where various cultural and spiritual events are successfully organized. Visitors of the Soko Monastery have sport terrains and grounds at their disposal. The spring has been designed by the skilled hands of builders into the cascades of the waterfall. Surroundings of the Soko Monastery is rich in opulent and intact natural environment with rocky peaks and springs with healing fresh waters.
The remarkable Orthodox 12 meters high golden cross dominates over the Soko Monastery scenery and spreads its shine even in the dark. The spring falling from its natural settings and modern structures rich in knowledge and spirit, create the waterfalls and curing water of incomparable beauty.
