Municipium Dardanorum DD is the former Roman settlement and large economic center in Ibar River Valley, close to the village of Sočanica, 27 km north from Kosovska Mitrovica. The Roman settlement in Sočanica representing one of the most important mining centers of Upper Mezija was established in the 2nd century. Municipium Dardanorum DD was located in the vast mining region of Rogozna and Kopaonik mountains rich in lead, zinc and gold ore. The town covered the area of 30 hectares. The central part of this archaeological complex spreads over tender slope and on the terraces as well as on the flat terrain at the right bank of Sočansk River, at its confluence with Ibar River. It got the status of municipium in the 2nd century.At this time Romans inhabited those regions due to huge ore deposits of lead, zinc and gold.
Municipim Dardanorum was deserted in the 4th century. The most comprehensive excavation woks were carried out in the fifties of the 20th century. The central part of the site was uncovered when the temple and forum on the eastern side was found, basilica and part of the water-supply system and baths in its northern part. Most of structures were built of massive pieces of stone from the nearby stone-mine while arches were built of bricks and river pebble-stone. The temple of size 15,75 x 14, 25 m dating back to the period from 136 to 138 dedicated to Antinoi was excavated in the central part of the forum. In the 3rd and the 4th century storage for wheat were uncovered as well as rectangular basilica 55meters long and 16,75 meters wide with semi-circle apse south from the forum. Walls of some structures were decorated with frescoes and colorful plates of marble. The Vila Rusticae and some small necropolis were found. During later research four of necropolis with several sarcophagi and built tombs belonging to the settlement were thoroughly investigated. Also some locations within the village were uncovered that have pointed numerous metal objects and tools used for mining and metallurgy as the main work of inhabitants of this settlement. The large number of tomb stones were discovered at Socanica, among them majority as the grave stones and memorial objects. Beside them the note about the building of the temple to Antinoi is one of the most important. So far such mining region that had left so many traces and had such developed metallurgy had not been found in the Balkans.
