Potpec Pecina Cave
Potpećka Pecina – Potpec Pecina Cave is situated 14 km away from the town of Užice in West Serbia and only 2km from the main Belgrade- Uzice road. Potpećka Pećina Cave lies on the northern part of the 932 meters high Dreznička Gradina Mountain near the village of Potpece, in the cliff which is more than 80 meters high.The monumental entrance of Potpecka Pecina Cave is one of the hugest in Serbia and amongst the tallest in the world. Entrance to Potpecka Pecina Cave is shaped like a huge horseshoe, 50 meters high, 25 meters wide in the arch and 16 meters wide at the base. Potpecka Pecina Cave is one of the best tourist attraction in the West Serbia, due to its wonderful appearance and the interesting surroundings, cultural attractions and sites.
Potpećka Pecina Cave is a resurgence which is formed on three levels. One enters through an old fossil entrance on the left and exits through an entrance of Potpecka Pecina Cave on the right, 30m and 700 steps further up. After the entrance at “Siljate Stene”, one enters “Tavan”, the large chamber of Potpecka Pecina Cave with the “Byzantine style” cupola. The chamber is lit by daylight, and has an unforgettable view. The outline of the entrance looks like an Elephant with the “Strazar Tower”, and these are found on the cave’s logo. From “Tavan” one passes through the tunnel of “Glavni Hodnik”, to enter “Prolaz Nade”, a chamber of Potpecka Pecina Cave where during the past 10 years cavers have discovered more than 2,185 meters of passage. Though this chamber of Potpecka Pecina Cave one comes to “Niska Dvorana”, where the remains of ice-age fauna have been found. Another passage of Potpecka Pecina Cave, “Minerski Prolaz” leads to “Galerija Mladih Istrazivaca” or the Hall of the Young Explorers. Next is “Cvijiceva Dvorana Chamber”, named after Jovan Cvijic, the famous Yugoslavia speleologist. Visitors of Potpecka Pecina Cave then pass through the “Prolaz Slijepih Miseva” tunnel to the ‘Dreznick Canal’, a part of Potecka Pecina Cave which shows how this large cave system 6-8 km in length links the villages of Dreznik and Potpece. In this Canal of Potpecka Pecina Cave there are groups of formations, “Snezana”, “Sedam Patuljaka”, “Don Kihot,” “Nevestinski Veo” the 3,5 meters high column etc. From “Dreznicki Put” visitors of Potpecka Pecina Cave return by the same path till they are nearly back to “Tavan Chamber”, and then descend to the magnificent cave entrance by 150 steps. The 555 meters long tourist route of Potpecka Pecina Cave arranged in numerous steps /some 700 steps altogether/ amazes every visitor.
