Since 2000 Kotor is regarded one of the most beautiful bays in the world, and one of the most distinctive landscapes anywhere in the Mediterranean. The breathtaking hills and mountains divide the bay into the Bay of Herceg Novi, the Bay of Tivat and the Bay of Risan and Kotor, connected via the Kumbor and Verige straits, making the narrowest part of the wonderful bay – only 300 meters wide. Along the coast of the Boka Kotor there are small settlements steeped in charm, tradition and natural splendor, all of which has its own charm, story and history worth-discovering – Igalo, Herceg Novi, Djenovici, Baosici, Bijela, Perast, Risan, Ljuta, Dobrota, Stoliv, Morinj, Prcanj.... From afar, under the Montenegrin sun, the towns glitter as if they are made of gold. Boka-Kotor Bay is an exceptional cultural landscape created by the harmonious symbiosis of natural phenomena and man-made heritage. Walls of the mighty Kotor stronghold, one of the miracles of the Medieval fortification architecture of the Adriatic, have been established gradually from the 9th till the 19th century, and make the continual row of walls around the historical urban core and the steep slope of the Sveti Ivan hill (San Giovanni) above the town. In the wonderful Boka-kotor Bay there are 7 picturesque islands – Saint Mark, Mamula, Gospa od Skrpjela, St George, Milosrda, Ostrvo cveca and Mala Gospa, providing outstanding maritime scenery.

The ecclesiastical architecture of the Boka-Kotor Bay settlements has developed through the blending of different styles, especially Romanesque and Baroque. Kotor lies in the foot of the gigantic Lovcen Mountain in a fiord which is, by its beauty and appearance, unique in the whole of the Mediterranean. Kotor and surrounding sleepy fishermen villages turned into tourist centers are famous for seafarers and noble merchants who donated numerous patrician mansions to testify on their period, which today proudly represents former glory and rich legacy of this magical area. The scenic Bay of Kotor itself has been a beacon of inspiration for generations of artists and poets, but also hosts various colorful festivals making the region internationally recognized as one of Montenegro’s principal attractions and cultural treasures. Each year the Mimosa Festival is celebrated in February, inviting everybody to join the the various performances and events. The colorful festivities come alive with cultural events, sports events, carnivals and masked balls. The cultural essence of this festival is further enhanced by the presence of young Herceg Novi majorettes and the lively city band. The masked parade walks through the town, cheerfully waving the first blossoms of mimosa. Hikers fell in love with Kotor Bay while climbing a 4km path up the mountain and guarantee such hike is certainly worth it. The rewards is seeing the old fortress on top of the mountain and the incredible views of Tivat and out to sea. Gornja Lastva is tiny Mediterranean settlement on the Vrmac Hill, at elevation of 300 meters, which divides the Tivat Bay from the Kotor Bay, 3 km away from the Adriatic road, by the local paved road. Gornja Lastva village is set on the sunny slope of the Vrmac Hill, and experiences the wonderful panorama of the Tivat Bay, and further to the Lustica Peninsula, direction of the open sea.
Shore of Djenovici is 2 km long and features small sandy and concrete beaches, encircled with various fragrant Mediterranean vegetation. Besides the variety of locally grown Mediterranean plants, there is rich variety of exotic plants, brought here by seafarers from all over the world. Thus in Kotor Bay there are found plants such as magnolia, mimosa, camellia, oleander, agave, bougainvillea, eucalyptus, Chilean sensitive spruce and other plants, that are well adjusted to this wonderful Adriatic climate. The bathing season in Boka Kotor Bay lasts for 6 months – from May till October. The most frequent winds are bura (north-east wind) in winters, and “maestral” (north-west wind) in summers. The warm wind “jugo” brings lots of rain to the area, making it an often natural phenomenon in autumn and winter. Precipitation come exclusively in rain, while the other forms of precipitation are very rare. The average precipitation rate in the Boka Kotor area is 1755 mm and the air is invigorating and clean. Such climatic conditions enabled this gorgeous coastal area to become a pleasant and suitable tourist destination throughout the year.
