National Museum Valjevo

Valjevo’s National Museum was established in 1951 at the initiative of Valjevo Municipality and it has more than half of a century successful experience in protection and presentation of cultural heritage of town of Valjevo and municipalities of Kolubara Region. There are 6 permanent exhibitions offered by Museum of Valjevo. Settings in the National Museum itself and The Muselim’s house as well as future exhibition in Nenadovic family tower are located in Valjevo. In the vicinity of Valjevo, the National Museum offers exhibitions in Brankovina, Osecina and Struganik villages. Muselim’s house, oldest building in the town of Valjevo was the location of first museum setting. Its basement holds the memory of imprisoned dukes of Aleksa Nenadovic and Ilija Bircanin, prior to decapitation on the bank of Kolubara river. Tower of Nenadovic family certainly became a symbol of Valjevo. It has been built by Jakov Nenadovic and his son Jevrem in spring of 1813, next to road for Sabac, at the edge of Klicevac hill for the purpose of armory storage for the Serbian rebels.

The National Museum of Valjevo includes the internal museum gallery in which throughout the year a dozen various occasional thematic exhibitions are set. The National Museum in Valjevo houses occasional programs that monitor contemporary productions (fine arts, photography …). The National Museum of Valjevo was in 2012 awarded with the Tourist Flower, the prize of the Tourist Organization of Serbia to institutions and entities who contribute to tourist development of Serbia.
