Maldar Manor House Maldarasti / Horezu

Maldar Manor House is luxury facility – a historical hotel in Valcea area, in Horezu – south-central Romania, a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Bucharest, that makes an excellent example of old-fashioned Oltenian boyar charm. The beautifully arranged estate, situated near Horezu on the lower slopes of Magura Slatioara in Maldaresti, welcomes visitors to an authentic kula, where every nook is alive with stories of knights and ladies of the past. The enterprising owners of the Maldar Manor House in Maldarasti succeeded to provide their guests not only with atmospheric elements and details, but also with a complete experience that would allow them to enjoy the true charm of boyar-style life.

The building itself with a turbulent history, is impeccably restored by its owners – entrepreneurs from Craiova, and preserves all the architectural details of the Oltenia kulas in their entirety – from the majestically white walls to the inner stairs and the porch vaults. The manor is an authentic kula, restored with attention to details and authentic historic furniture, traditional carpets and embroidered linen. The Maldar Manor House in Maldarasti boasts 15 uniquely appointed rooms, 12 doubles and 3 singles, each named after a princess of prince of the old times, who lived in the manor in the past 350 years and truly present the details of the lifestyle of the boyars of Oltenia. Each room is a refined ensemble where genuine historical pieces of furniture, old ceiling beams and traditional rugs, collected from antique shops across Romania over the years, harmoniously blend in with modern comforts. This 18th-century fortified manor house (conac), that has been converted into a hotel is a fine example of southern Romania’s traditional architecture and Maldar Manor House. All the original architectural details of the manor – thick walls, the watch tower, secret passageways, the arched balcony running the entire length of the upper floor, immaculately whitewashed walls – have been preserved intact. Room Amenities: Each of the manor’s fifteen rooms has its own tale and is carefully decorated with authentic antique furniture, traditional carpets and pottery and, dowry chests. All rooms have private bathrooms with all the modern comforts. Second-floor rooms have private balcony. The staff wears period outfits, and the rooms feature starched bed sheets, how it would have been back then.

A particular point of pride of the Maldar Manor House is the gastronomic concept, based on what the hosts define as “culinary moments”. There is no standard or à la carte menu, but guests can enjoy “The Boyar’s Lunch”, “The Princess’s Supper” or “Madam’s Exquisite Dinner”. The latter, for example, involves delicacies inspired by French cuisine, such as spicy game dishes, roast duck cooked with onion jam, raisins and baked bell-peppers, and turkey in a truffle sauce. Recipes may be inspired by flavors of the season or the specific tastes of Oltenia, but they can also be shaped by a guest’s wishes – perhaps recalling some childhood taste of Romania they have been missing.

Guests are invited to enjoy in their favorite drink on the dazzlingly white balcony, under the arches from where the boyars of old once scanned the horizon or meditate after an invigorating walk in the beautiful surroundings in the vast green garden full of fresh green grass and trees, or take part in the memorable weddings or refined parties.
