Kronic Palace Hotel Sombor
The town of Sombor is located in the north-westernmost part Serbia, in the vast plain of the Backa district of Vojvodina Province, some 125 km north of Novi Sad, and 185 km north of Belgrade, 60 km south of Mohacs in Hungary, some 30 km away from the border crossing Batina in Croatia and further 70 km away from town of Osijek.
The Kronić Palace is wonderful structure that was constructed in the beginning of the 20th century as the lavish family residence of rich Sombor lawyer and landowner dr Stevan Kronic who got his wealth by marriage with wife from reputed and influential Vuic Family from Sombor.
The splendid Kronic Palace in Sombor has features of the Russian church architecture, designed by architect Vladimir Nikolic – richly decorated facades, gates, corridors, stairs, balconies, domed attics, and surroundings of wonderfully appointed vast park with yard and rose garden, summer patio and own well.
Due to high construction and maintenance costs as well as due to style of life that did not follow up the income, doctor Stevan Kronic bankrupted right before the beginning of the First World War.
The Kronic Palace and part of the estate that belonged to already impoverished Kronic family was confiscated, and the palace was turned into the „Stefaneum“ student residence that soon became one of the most modern male centers of education for male students in Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
The reputed pharmacists from Sombor, Djordje Djurica Antic bought the Palace in 1938 and after the liberation gifted it to the new partisan authorities.
During the occupation, from 1941 till 1944 the Hungarian County Court was located in the Kronic Palace. Partisans run the military court and the prison at the Kronic Palace after the Second World War.
During time, the palace often changed aim and name – it was the Agriculture court, the Workers center with the Workers University and the seat of the district Union Association of Yugoslavia, the Cooperative Savings Bank, the Communal Bank, the Association of pensioners, the Cultural – educational Community, and since 1970 till 2000 here was located the Economic Court.
The Kronić Palace in Sombor has the status of monument of culture under protection, and since 2000 it came into hands of the Kronic Family. Thanks to comprehensive reconstruction, today the Kronic Palace attracts by its beauties and amenities on the surface of 3 hectares which are at disposal of tourists and business people.
