Heritage Hotel Gate of Sarajevo
The Heritage Hotel Gate of Sarajevo is comfortable small 4 stars historic hotel /opened in 2017/ located near Bascarsija – Sarajevo Old town, close /100 m/ to the Sarajevo City Hall and numerous sites, restaurants and cafes, on a place where Isa-Beg – the founder of Sarajevo had built his first structure called the Isa-Beg dervish house.
Isa-beg’s tekke is one of the most important tekkes in Sarajevo, built before 1462, considered the oldest institution in Sarajevo. Isa-beg Ishakovic had carefully selected the location of his tekke, regarding the God’s sign for a sacred place, and its unique surroundings of the Miljacka river and the canyon. After its establishment, Isa Beg had listed the tekke in his deed of endowment (vakufnama) issued in 1462. Among other estates, Isa Beg mentions a musafirhana (shelter for pilgrims and travellers). During its long history, the Tekke-Tekija has been damaged and destroyed in fires and floods many times and had experienced thorough reconstructions several times. In 1957 the Tekke was demolished and its cemetery destroyed for the last time. The great wealth and beauty of the tekke has been described by Evlija Celebi Evliya Çelebi, an Ottoman traveller and journalist: ”The Tekija of Mevlevi order: At the bank of the Miljacka river, on the place resembling a paradise, a vakuf tekija of Jelaluddin Rumi is placed. Tekija has simhana (the room where rituals of the dervish order were preformed), mejdan room – (where dervishes could meet to socialize outside of the rituals), seventy to eighty rooms for the poor, balcony for those who sing and play music, imares (kichens for the poor), and a dining hall.“
