Dan Dar Apartments and Villa Dojran Lake
The Dojran Lake is the smallest tectonic lake of Macedonia, in the southeastern most part of Macedonia, which covers surface of 43,10 sq km. Studies and numerous artifacts point to the fact that the area around the Dojran lake was inhabited as early as pre-history. There are inscriptions from the 5th Century BC that describe the life in ancient times in the area of today’s Lake Dojran. The Greek historian Herodotus noted that Peons live near the lake Prazja (Dojran Lake) whose main occupation was fishing. He wrote that the lake was rich in fish and that it was enough to put empty baskets in the water at night and take them out in the morning filled with fish. Historian Herodotus also mentions some of the neighboring dwelling places which could only be approached by boats, as well as the specific fishing method by means of birds (cormorants or other bird-divers) that fly low and drive fish into the fishing ponds, the so-called mandras by the Dojran fishermen. The description given by this historian is not much different from the picture that one can be seen today. In the 19th century Dojran was a beautiful town on the hill facing the beautiful lake, with 2000 houses and 8000 inhabitants, various stores, inns, craftsmen’s’ workshops … that all resembled the town of Thessaloniki, and thus was often called the “Small Thessaloniki”. During the First World War, the airplanes and the cannons of the Entente completely destroyed this beautiful settlement and population was forced to move, terrified by harsh bombardment. After the war they returned here are established the new fishermen village of Nov Dojran /New Dojran/.
The Dorjan Municipality today includes several settlements: Star Dojran /administrative center/, Durutli, Gjopčeli, Kurtamžali, Nikolikje, Nov Dojran, Organdžali, Sevendekli, Sretenovo, Furka, Crničani, Čaušli and Šumabos. The western part of the Dojran Lake belongs to Macedonia, while the eastern part belongs to Greece. Elevation of the Dojran Lake is 148 meters and the lake features peaceful and rather shallow waters, with deepest points of some 10 meters. The Dojran Lake is known as the fishermen paradise for sport fishing /surely for all fishermen with licenses/, so here are organized numerous national and international fishermen competitions. The wonderful Belasica Mountain encircles the Dorjan Lake in the Macedonian side, while in the Greek side it is the Krusa Mountain. One third of the Dorjan Lake is of tectonic origin that is leftover of the former three-times larger and deeper Peonic Lake. Waters of the Dojran Lake is very warm – lukewarm, and considered curative thanks to algae and mud, which is recommended for healing rheumatism, sinusitis and similar illnesses.
