City Museum of Novi Sad
The City Museum of Novi Sad is a museum of complex type dedicated to collecting, preservation, presentation and interpretation of multi-layer and multinational cultural heritage of the area of Novi Sad and the areas that gravitate to it. Respecting the principles modern museum practice and following modern scientific tendencies, experts of the City Museum of Novi Sad have been creating safe conditions for protection of cultural artifacts, whose presentation, as a kind of media, enable an objective interpretation of the facts. Permanent exhibitions of the City Museum of Novi Sad are the Foreign Art Collection, Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj Memorial collection, Exhibition “Novi Sad from the 18th till the 20th century”, Sremski Karlovci Homeland Collection, uniquely interesting Underground Military Galleries of the Petrovaradin Fortress and the Great War Well.
Conservation and restoration department of the City Museum of Novi Sad is engaged in conservation and restoration of museum items; specifying conditions for storing museum items; specifying conditions for storing museum items in depots, at exhibitions and during transport; organizing a constant monitoring of storage conditions of and level of risk of museum items; setting priorities of conservation treatment related to protection of the collection as a whole and of individual items; exploring the possibilities for introduction of new methods of conservation and restoration; studying the causes that lead to the item damage; creating professional and technical documentation; organizing work and work on conservation and restoration in the field… The archaeological collection of City Museum of Novi Sad includes numerous objects of material and spiritual culture of the prehistoric ages, Roman domination and the medieval period. They originate from the identified localities in the city area and the territory that gravitates towards Novi Sad and Petrovaradin, i.e. area of southern Bačka and northern hillsides of Fruska Gora. Department of Cultural History of the City Museum of Novi Sad contains a collection of varied character, with about 6,000 museum objects that have been collected over the past five decades. Department of Documentation and Library keep records for documentation of the museum items, as follows: – The book of entry (in which are recorded the museum items obtained by repurchases, donations and archaeological excavations) and The book of outputs (in which are recorded the museum items that are borrowed to other institutions for display and presentation). Department of Ethnology of City Museum of Novi Sad collects, processes, stores and presents artifacts of material and spiritual culture of the inhabitants of Novi Sad and settlements that gravitate to it, both from Bačka and Srem. Diverse in material, function and size, the exhibits date from the late 18th until the mid-20th century. Department of History of the City Museum of Novi Sad is engaged in collecting items related to social, economic and political history of the city of Novi Sad, from ancient times to the present day. Department of Homeland Gallery is the youngest department in the City Museum of Novi Sad. It was created in 1963 in within the Department of Cultural History, and in 1978 got the status of a special department in the Museum. Pedagogical department of the City Museum of Novi Sad organizes and runs the realization of forms and aspects of cooperation with educational institutions both on teaching plan and extra-curricular activities in order that museum activities become an integral part of the overall educational impact.
