The C’a Steva Hotel in Sremski Karlovci got its name after Stevan Stratimirovic /1757-1836./, who was the Bishop of Buda of Budapest, and the Metropolitan of Sremski Karlovci and prominent historical personality which was known and called by the local population Čika Steva /Uncle Steven, shortened  Č’a Steva/ and whose realistic portrait is positioned at the very entrance to the hotel. Stevan Stratimirović was church and national leader born in the village of Kulpin, where his parents received privileges, large estate and noble titles from Queen Maria Theresa for their significant military merits. By his authority and efforts, the Metropolitan Stevan Stratimirović gained permission from the Austrian Court of Habsburg s to establish the Gymnasium in Sremski Karlovci in 1792 which was the first gymnasium in Serbia. Besides the Gymnasium of Sremski Karlovci, the Metropolitan Stevan Stratimirović with support of the merchant Dimitrije Anastasijevic Sabov /1726-1803/ founded other important educational institutions: the Seminary of Sremski Karlovci in 1794, the Stefaneum, established in 1797, as well as the Gymnasium of Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj, established in Novi Sad in 1810. Numerous European scientists were interested for the works and books of Stefan Stratimirovic. He enriched and enabled for scientific work the Library of the Patriarchate in Sremski Karlovci, helped printing of numerous church books and introduced history as the mandatory teaching subject in all schools of Serbia. Stefan Stratimirovic was lover of science and literacy that he fully was engaged in. The inheritance of Stefan Stratimović are numerous works in Latin, German and Serbian among which are historical, literal and church works.
