The present day city of Vrsac was settled from the prehistoric times, to be replaced by Thracians, Celts, Skits, Dacians, Romans, Gaepids, Avars and Slavs who had lived here. Apart from economic development crafts and trade also began to develop, with numerous guilds and over 1000 craftsmen workshops, so the town grew more and more into cultural and educational center. The Vrsac Tower is the landmark of the City and surrounding, and most probably, have been built by the orders of the Serbian despot Djuradj Brankovic in 1439 on the 399 meters high hill, dominating the whole area. During the second half of the 18th century Vrsac had the first pharmacy “Kod Spasitelja” (At Saviour’s), the post office, the first Primary School was founded and the oldest part of the Vrsac Magistrate or “Municipije” was built. In 1757 the Bishop’s Residence was built, the Church of the Assumption (1766), the Great Synod Church (1785). Vrsac got Grammatical School in 1790, owing to extraordinary efforts of the bishop Josif Jovanovic Sakabenta. The first theatrical plays were played in Serbian language in 1793, performed by Grammatical School students, before whom the guest of the German theaters from Timisoara performed their plays. A magnificent Roman – catholic Church dedicated to St Gerhard was built in 1863 in Neo Gothic style. Part of Vršac Municipality is located within the Deliblato Sands Special Nature Reserve which is usually called the “European Sahara”. The beautiful Vrsac Town park spreads on the area of almost 6 ha and has been designed in a heterogeneous style featuring influences of the French method of designing round flower beds mixes with free English style in arranging trees, lawns and bushes. Centuries old meeting place of the townsfolk has many times changed its appearance and purposes and used to be a market place, a square, an execution site, the main road through the center. Today again it is a square, a modern pedestrian paved zone, with three fountains, old oaks, many cafes, the town clock and a beautiful white cross in its very heart. Mesic Monastery is about 10 km away from Vrsac. Special experience is bike ride along the gentle slopes of Vršac Mountains, or along the paved, and macadam and forest cycling routes of about 100 km within the Vršac Municipality area.

The favorable terrains and sun exposition and climate provided Vrsac area superb conditions for wine – growing since the ancient times. The treasurer of Hungarian king Laszlo II paid a barrel of Vrsac wine ten and half gold coins in 1494. Turkish traveler and writer Evlija Celebija, traveling though this region wrote”…in the eastern part of this town, going upwards to the old town there are hills planted with wine grape. The grapes in the color of a ruby are very delicious…”It remained like this in Vrsac and its beautiful surroundings until the present, so excellent vineyards are rich in extraordinary sorts of grapes, like Smederevka, Dinka, Slankamenka, Portugieser and Kreatza brands, and result in numerous tempting wineries and wine cellars with excellent wines of Vrsac region. Close to Vrsac, the small Gudurica village is one of the biggest producers of grape and wine in the region. The grapes are grown in lanes and are specifically positioned to withstand the region’s low temperatures. Visit to the Vršac wineries is exciting experience and strongly recommended !
