Bobija Mountain
As a part of northern Kopaonik Mountain lies Goč Mountain (1124 m) some 200 km south from Belgrade. Thick larch forests, numerous creeks, small lake and large lawns are part of perfect Nature reservations. Except winter sports, other sports and recreational activities are possible. Goč Mountain is also known for cultural-historical monuments, such as “Roman Cemetary” where barrowed coal-miners had been working here in times of the Nemanjić dinasty .
Golija is the highest mountain in Southwest Serbia (Jankov Kamen peak, 1844m), S-shaped and 32 km long. By size and heights it can only be compared to Kopaonik Mountain. Thanks to its outstanding unspoiled beauties and wild settings UNESCO declared Golija as the Biosphere Reserve called Golija-Studenica covering 53.804 ha amongst the World’s nature reservation in 2001. It is about 300 km far from Belgrade. Tičar Lake or Dajićko Lake are magnificent examples of preserved nature resorts protected by law associated with numerous legends. Golija Mountain is premium location for passionate mountain climbers, adventurers and nature-lovers.
Kopaonik (known as the Silver mountain) is the biggest mountain massif in Serbia which is spread from northwest to southeast of Serbia along 75km, and is 40 km wide in its middle part. Part of its surface is protected zone proclaimed Kopaonik National Park, comprising abundance of intact nature and beautiful landscape, being the biggest and most important ski center in Serbia. Its highest peak is Pancicev vrh /Pancic's Peak/ with 2017m altitude where there is the Mausoleum of well-known Serbian naturalist Josif Pancic. Whole mountain massif is named by huge mineral wealth which was exploited since the Middle ages.
Thanks to developed tourist center with most modern hotels and ski and related facilities, Kopaonik Mountain is one of the most popular tourist destination in Serbia.
The largest surface on Kopaonik Mountain is Ravni Plateau, around which are Suvo Rudište with Pancic's peak, Karaman (1934m), Gobelja (1834m) and southeast from Suvo Rudište are Cardak (1590m), Satorica (1750m), Oštro Koplje (sharp spear, 1789m). Between those peaks there are steep inclinations and canyons. On Kopaonik there are lot of conifer forests. Kopaonik is the place where you can find examples of endemic flora like Panic's spruce, Pancic's watercress, and Kopaonik violet. There are also a lot of animal species like gray falcon, fallow-deer, wild cat, eagle...
Stock-breeding is the dominant industry of population, yet in the latest period tourism business greatly involve locals. On plane surface of Kopaonik Mountain the huge mountainous tourist center has been established with many hotels and diversified accommodation capacities, variety of ski roads, ski-lifts and related infrastructure. The new tourist complex near Brzece village, on east slopes of Kopaonik Mountain is in construction, where there are about 1000 beds in hotels and apartments. Beauties of Kopaonik Mountain come from its extreme reliefs : Oceanic-blue mountain fields, bushy evergreen forests, mountain peaks from where you can observe distant Sara and Stara Mountains... Those features stay in indelible memory of everyone who visits this "Mountain Beauty".
Maljen Mountain - Divčibare
Largest Mountain in Podrinje - Valjevo mountain chain. Along Povlen Mountain one can see large number of farmers' cottages. This mountain consist of two parts - Veliki Povlen “Big Povlen” ( 1271 m ) and Mali Povlen “ Small Povlen” ( 1347 m ) - the highest peak. Both Povlen Mt. lie north-west of Valjevo, and west of Magleš and Bukovo. Like saddle between historical rivers Drina and Kolubara, as a crossroad between paved and asphalted road Valjevo-Užice rises Debelo Brdo hill an ethno-touristic center. Plenty of old monuments and spiritual monasteries (Ćelije, Lelić, Pustinja...) are located nearby.
Prokletije Mountain
The massif of Prokletije Mountains stretches on
the territories of the three countries - Montenegro, Serbia /Kosovo and Metohija area/ and Albania. Actually, that incredible range is a natural border between these three countries. The highest peaks of that range are placed in Albanian part of massif. Some of those impressive summits are Maja Popluks /2569 m, Pop-Lukin vrh/, Maja Jezerce (2694 m, Jezerski Vrh/, Maja Hekurave /2625 m/, Majet e Zabores /massif with 10 peaks above 2400 m/, Maja Briaset /2567 m, Brijac/, Maja Shnikut /2554 m, Nikački Vrh/, Maja Radohines /2570 m/, Maja Livades /2496 m/ and Maja Malisores /2490 m, Malisorski Vrh/. Also, it's neighborhood is enriched by amazing valleys above which proudly dominate wonderful Prokletije Mountains ranges. The highest summit of Prokletije Mountains in Serbia is Djeravica /2656m/ which is the highest peak of Serbia.
Pešter Plateau
Pešter or Pešterska visoravan is a karst plateau in the southwestern Serbia of Stari Vlah area, in the Rashka region. It lies at the altitude of 900-1200meters. The territory of the plateau is mostly located in the municipality of Sjenica with parts belonging to Novi Pazar and Tutin. The name of the region comes from the word pešter, which is an archaic term for cave. The plateau is actually a large field (Peštersko polje) surrounded by mountains of Jadovnik (1734 m), Zlatar (1627 m), Ozren (1680 m), Giljeva (1617 m), Zilidar (1616 m), Javor (1520 m) and Golija (1833 m). With the area of around 50 km², Pešter field is the largest field in Serbia, and the highest one in the Balkans. Rivers Uvac, Vapa, Jablanica and Grabovica flow through Pešter plateau. In the geologic past, Pešter field was a large lake, of which only a small Sjenica Lake near the village of Tuzinje remained. The soil of Pešter is mostly karst interspersed with vast pastures. Economy of the area relies primarily on cattle breeding, chiefly sheep. Pešter is famous for its dairy products, especially the "Sjenica cheese" (Sjenički sir), as well as lamb smoked beef or sheep. The plateau is sparsely populated : most settlements are on the edge of the field. Pešter is famous for its microclimate, which is particularly harsh in the winter months. The lowest temperature in Serbia since measurements are taken, -39 °C is measured at Karajukića Bunari village on the 26th January 2006 beating the previous record of -38.4°C measured in Sjenica in 1954.
250 km south from Belgrade, 30 km far from town of Niš, Rtanj Mountain spreads its range ending with remarkable stunning cliff with unforgettably perfect shape reminding of the hat. Its peak Šiljak is the highest in Sokobanja municipality (1560 m.), and the mountains mostly spread their ranges on the altitude between 500-1000 m. This Mountain is known for diversity of game. Exceptional sorts of medicinal herbs and mushrooms could be found.
Rudnik Mountain dominating over central Serbia is located some 100 kilometers south of Belgrade. Besides its' highest peak Cvijicev Vrh (Cvijic Peak 1132 m), there are Srednji and Mali Šturac, Molitve, Paljevine and Marijanac peaks exceeding 1000 m above sea level. Nearby Oplenac and Takovo, Monasteries Vraćevšnica, Voljavča and Ovčar-Kablar monasteries are remarkable historical sites. Pleasant climate, fresh air and numerous walking paths are features of Mt. Rudnik.
The elongated ridge of Mt.Stara Planina /Old Mountain/ form a natural border between Serbia and Bulgaria that spreads in the lenght of 130 km, capturing Knjaževac and Pirot municipalities. The slopes towards Bulgaria are steep and hardly accessible while the western side of the mountain gently descends towards the Nišava River valley. The Nature Park Stara Planina covers surface of 142000 ha. The highest peak of the Serbian part of Stara Planina Mountain is Midzor (2169 m above sea level) at the same time the highest peak in Serbia. It is true challenge for remarkably endurant climbers !
Suva planina Mountain is a pearl of north-eastern Serbia of amazing beauty spreading on 250 square km. It is located on one of the worlds' most famous mountain chains “CATENA MUNDI”, 15 km east from Niš. The highest peaks are Trem (1870 m), Sokolov kamen and Mošor forming Suva Planina one of the most impressive in Serbia. Beautiful Sićevo canyon is dividing this mountain from nearby Svrljiške planine Mountains. Climbers just love it !
Tara Mountain is one of the most beautiful mountains in Serbia. It features preserved neverending fir woods and fascinating vast areas at the altitude of 1.000 - 1.200 m above sea level with over 1000 species of medicinal herbs and forest fruits. It is covered by dense woods with clearings and meadows, rocky cliffs, gorges and caves. It is the home for over 153 bird species and diverse flora. Pancic's Spruce is a unique specie found only on Tara Mountain. Varied landscape and preserved vegetation have enabled survival to many animal species such as brown bear, chamoise, grouse, golden eagle etc.
Tara offers ideal conditions for an active holiday. In winter the guests can ski on its tracks at 1.000 m above sea level. There are two ski lifts, one for children and beginners /150 m long/ and the other for recreation skiers /450 m long/. During summer season guests experience variety of facilities such are beautiful lake beaches, boat excursions, outdoor swimming pools, 10 km long walkways. Sportsmen gladly use 1.6 km long trim track, a football pitch and outdoor courts. Some other activities can be practised such as walking, canyoning, bike riding, sailing on the lake, fishing, rafting and photo safari. Special attractions are visits to Medieval monasteries /Raca Monastery from 13th century/, old tombstone necropolis in Perucac and Rastiste or travelling by «Sargan Eight» (narrow-gauge railway), visit the Tarabics' house /family of prophets known as Serbian Nostradamus family/. The woods, canyons and shores of Tara Mountain keep traces of prehistoric, Antique, Roman and Byzantine cultures.
Dinaric log cabins on shores of the river Drina represent a unique folk art. The river with a lake near Perucac are abundant in all sorts of fish.
Zlatar mountain (highest peak Golo Brdo 1.627m) is located between Lim, Mileševka and Bistrica rivers at the edge of wild Pester Plateau. All characteristics of Zlatar mountain perform its name/golden mountain/ : flowering meadows, crystal lakes surrounded by pine and birch forests, the harmony of mediterranean and mountain climate, numerous sunny days/over 2000 sunny hours/, fresh mountain air rich in terpentine and ozone, endless spectacular views... Zlatar mountain, thanks to its morphology, pleasant climate, specific fauna and authentic nature ranks amongs the main tourist regions in Serbia, suitable for sport and recreative activities, excursions, health and wellness tourism, hunting, convention and village tourism. The protected Balkan bird "griffon voulture" is settled above the Uvac River Canyon. This nature reservation, as the ecological region full of clear waters rich in fresh-water fish, the rafting and photo-safari programs attract many visitors. Three artifical lakes, the Zlatar, the Sjenica and the Radoinja Lakes, as well as the Mileševa Monastery complete the tourist offer of Zlatar Mountain, that is often considered as the most beautiful mountain in Serbia.
Jastrebac is the highest mountain in central Serbia, close to town of Krusevac. Amongst all Balkan mountains Jastrebac Mountain features the dense forests and abundance of waters and springs. It is specially convenient for nature-lovers and recreant visitors enjoying easy mountaineering and walking along vast meadows full of springs and waterfalls. The highest summits "Ðulica" (1491 m) and "Pogled" (1481 m) make the natural border between Toplica River and Pomoravlje area. Thick forests of Jastrebac Mountain represent rich raw material for Wood-processing Industry of Krusevac. At the southern slopes of Jastrebac Mountain there is the artificial lake with beautiful shore situated in the heart of sunny valley. Variety of trekking walkways are spread along Jastrebac Mountain : "Bele Stene" (1257 m), "Stracimira" (1390 m), "Maznice" (1140 m) as well as routes up to the springs and the old St.Petka Church or the Medieval Gradac Fortification.
Zlatibor mountain, the mountain of golden pines, with highest peak Tornik (1496 m.) is situated in north-western part of Serbia, 200 km from Belgrade. At the altitude of 1.000 m on the most beautiful forest part of highland called Palisad, the Tourist Center of Zlatibor mountain is located. In nearby "Sirogojno Old Village" one can discover unique ethnological park, known for knitting, traditional old craft for generations passed on.
